Dishwasher and kitchen leak damage in Irvine usually spreads under cabinets, where you can't see it, so a damp toe kick often means water has already run under the whole run of base cabinets. Particleboard that swells won't flatten again, while plywood often dries in place. We remove toe kicks, meter the cabinet floors and dry the space underneath.
Signs of a Hidden Kitchen Leak
- Warped plank near dishwasherWood or laminate next to the dishwasher cups or swells when water seeps under it.
- Soft sink cabinet floorA sink base that flexes or bulges has been absorbing drips for a while.
- Damp floor by the fridgeA wet strip in front of the fridge often means the ice maker line is leaking.
- Musty smell from cabinetsA smell when you open a lower cabinet can mean water under its floor.
Drying a Kitchen After a Leak
- Shut off the supplyClose the valve under the sink or behind the fridge.
- Pull the applianceThe dishwasher or fridge comes out so we can reach the floor behind it.
- Open toe kicksRemoving the kick plates exposes the cavity under the cabinets for drying.
- Dry under the cabinetsAir movers blow into the cavity while a dehumidifier pulls moisture from the room.
- Check before resettingThe appliance goes back after cabinet floors and flooring test dry.
Kitchen Leaks Hide Under the Cabinets
Kitchen floors usually go in before or after the cabinets, and either way there's a hollow space under each base cabinet. A slow drip from a dishwasher supply, a fridge water line or a sink trap runs into that space and spreads along the whole cabinet run. By the time it shows at the toe kick, the cabinet floors and the flooring underneath may have been wet for days.
The appliance brand doesn't change the cleanup. We find the same failure points behind Bosch, Whirlpool, GE Appliances and Samsung dishwashers and refrigerators: a supply line fitting, a door gasket, a drain hose clamp. An appliance tech repairs the machine. We dry the kitchen around it.
Three Kitchen Leaks and Where the Water Goes
Dishwasher Supply or Door Leak
A dishwasher leaks in three common places: the supply line connection under the unit, the drain hose under the sink, and the door gasket during the wash cycle. You notice water at the front edge after a cycle, a warped floor plank next to the unit, or a swollen side panel on the cabinet beside it. We pull the dishwasher out, extract, check the subfloor and the cabinets on both sides and dry the space. Flooring under the dishwasher is often the wettest and hardest to reach.
Refrigerator Ice Maker Line
The thin plastic or copper line that feeds a fridge ice maker cracks, kinks or gets pinched when the fridge is moved. It leaks slowly behind the fridge, where it spreads under the cabinets beside it or into the wall. Signs include a damp floor in front of the fridge, a loose floor tile or a musty smell. We slide the fridge out, extract, open the toe kicks on nearby cabinets and meter the wall behind. A braided line is worth asking your installer about.
Sink Drain and Disposal Leaks
A loose slip nut on the trap, a cracked disposal housing or a worn drain basket gasket leaks only while water runs, so the cabinet floor under the sink soaks a little at a time. You find a stained or bulging sink base, a smell or soft flooring in front of the cabinet. Drain water is gray water, so we clean and treat the cabinet floor and the space under it as well as drying. A plumber fixes the drain; a swollen sink base may need replacing.
Older Woodbridge Kitchens and Hard Water
Woodbridge was built in phases during the 1970s and 1980s, so its kitchens range from original layouts to recent remodels. Original cabinets and supply valves wear differently from new ones, and we check both when we pull a dishwasher. Irvine's water also plays a part: IRWD's 2026 Water Quality Report lists average total hardness of 214 and 293 ppm for local treated water and 236 ppm for imported water, about 12.5 to 17.1 grains per gallon. Mineral buildup affects valves, ice maker lines and dishwasher fittings over time.
When a Towel Is Enough and When It Is Not
Visible water is easy; water under cabinets needs equipment.
| Situation | Fine to handle yourself | Call us |
|---|---|---|
| Puddle in front of the dishwasher | Shut its valve, towel up, run a fan | Flooring next to it lifts or swells |
| Drip under the sink | Tighten the slip nut, dry the cabinet floor | The sink base is soft or stained |
| Water behind the fridge | Close the ice maker valve and mop | Water ran under cabinets or into the wall |
| Wet toe kick | Shut off the water source | Always, since the cavity behind it is wet |

What Drives the Cost of Kitchen Leak Damage
Kitchen jobs depend on how far water spread under the cabinets and what the flooring is. Tile over slab often dries in place, while wood or laminate running under cabinets is hard to save. Replacing swollen cabinets falls under repair, not drying.
- Length of cabinet run with wet floors
- Flooring type under and around cabinets
- Cabinet boxes of particleboard versus plywood
- Wall drywall behind the fridge or dishwasher
- Gray drain water needing cleaning
Water damage restoration (overall): $1,200 to $5,000, national average $3,000. Source: Fixr, Updated January 31, 2025.

Questions about dishwasher & kitchen leak damage
Plywood cabinet boxes often dry without lasting damage if we reach them early. Particleboard swells, crumbles at the edges and won't flatten, so swollen sections usually need replacing. Our cabinet and vanity water damage page goes into more detail.
Rarely. Drying happens through the toe kick and from inside the cabinet, and countertops come off only if cabinets are replaced.
It sits in a closed bay with no air movement. Pulling the dishwasher out is the only way to dry the floor and the cabinet sides beside it.
It's gray water with food waste and bacteria, so treat it as dirty. Our water category guide explains why we clean before drying.
Not until the leak is repaired and the floor is dry. Each cycle can add water to the hidden space underneath.
Braided supply lines and a leak sensor under the sink catch most problems early. A look behind the fridge every few months does the rest.
